C B T

WHAT IS IT ?

CBT stands for compulsory basic training, its a legal requirement to activate your provisional motorcycle license.

its a basic training course { not a test }.

Introduced in 1990, prior to this you could just jump on a bike with l plates and ride, but as sales of motorcycles increased, so did the accident rate of new riders. so the government stepped in and introduced cbt and overnight it reduced the accident rate on new riders by over 70%.

so the purpose of it, is to give new riders some basic skills, thus improving road safety and activating your provisional license.

WHO HAS TO DO IT ?

All new riders of mopeds, scooters and motorcycles must do it, before they ride on public roads.

If you have a full car licence issued prior to February 1st 2001, you may ride a moped ( under 50 cc } on the road without l plates and also carry a passenger.

But you will need a cbt to ride any motorcycle 50cc or above, and then you will be governed by all the learner rules ,

ie,  NO carrying a passenger, NO traveling on motorways, MUST display l plates on the front and rear of the machine,  and your cbt lasts for 24 months from the day you do it, and must be renewed before it runs out to carry on riding unless you pass your motorcycle test in the meantime.

WHAT DOES IT COST and HOW DO I BOOK ONE ?

If we supply the machine it costs £115

If you use your own machine it costs £100

If you use your own machine, it must be totally road legal and display l plates front and rear. also remember you are NOT licensed to ride on public roads until you have completed a cbt.

ALSO  you are responsible for the reliability of the machine.

To book, we ask for prepayment, we accept bank / credit cards and it can be done by telephoning us on 568018.

Before you do your cbt, try to get some knowledge of the highway code. make sure you dress appropriately for riding a motorcycle. AND have suitable clothing for any change in the weather conditions.

Make sure you get a good nights sleep on the night before, and remember NO alcohol and be careful of any prescribed drugs if taken.

On the day, bring a packed lunch, ( it takes on average  5 to 8 hours }

DO NOT forget your license, if new type you will also need the paper counterpart, the old style, you will need some photo id, ie passport.

LICENSE....

The license you have must be either a provisional motorcycle, or if a provisional car, must have group A entitlement.

if its a full car license, it must have a provisional group A entitlement.

If you have a new photocard type license, check the photo is valid ( it has a 10 year lifespan}

if photo is out of date, you are unlicensed and can be fined up to £1000, so best to check it anyway.

VERY SORRY BUT IF YOU FORGET YOUR LICENCE, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO A CBT, AND THUS LOSE YOUR FEE.

Also if you wear glasses bring them with you, as there is a eyesight check as well.

On the day, we start at 9am sharp, so you will need to be there at 8.45am.

We meet at the rear playground of medina high school, fairlee road, newport.

REMEMBER IT IS NOT A TEST, AND WE AIM TO MAKE IT  INFORMATIVE AND ENJOYABLE FOR YOU.
